I wanted to talk about the concept of Friday, and the way it is represented in modern society. So for most of us friday represents freedom, good times, and escape from work/school/monotony of the every day. On the other hand we have the stereotype of monday as the start to another cycle of torture, and the “sunday scaries” leading up to this. Then there is saturday, the golden child of the week.
And yet, every day is 24 hours - equal time and opportunity for good and bad memories to be made. So why is it that we categorize our lives into not only good and bad days, but we do this consistently week after week — setting expectations for the day.
We live our thursdays for our fridays — but why? Why live our precious minutes in service to the future, what make the future more valuable than the present? I know that I am often guilty of this, especially when its driven by anxiety…..but I do value the present. I find it so sad when I ask a friend or loved one if they are excited for anything happening the next day, and they say “not really”. Yes, there are boring days, hard days, sad days, but we have to look beyond the surface of a “day” and categorizing it like this. I have had so many days that start off good and end badly, or the opposite. So, this wasn’t a good or bad day — it was just a day….a period of existence.
You have the power to make a day anything you want it to be. At any moment. My dad used to tell me when I was little before I left for school, to “make it a good day”. I love this idea so much because it puts the power back in our hands. We chose how we spend our time. Just because something “bad” happens doesn’t mean it’s a bad day. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be.
So, let’s not judge a day by its name or a week as a repetition of a pattern. Last monday, does not affect this monday. They are completely different days - and you have the ability to change the day to be however you want. It is better to think of time as a current rather than a tide, for time ultimately moves us linearly.
It’s so important to take a moment, and just stop. Just think about your day, what you accomplished and how you feel about that. Add interest in the routine. Make each day special - romanticize your life. We allow ourselves to romanticize the lives of others on social media, TV, movies, etc….but why not romanticize our own lives. Live each day uniquely, and start slowly. I started trying to romanticize my life by noticing flowers when I am out - something small life this, adds a little boost of happiness to my day. So find something small, and look for the little glimmers in life so that you are not living for the future, but living in the moment.
